Jills Eulogy

Created by Colin 7 years ago

Jill was born in 1960, the first born child to John and Mary. Her early years were in Lindsay Road, Leith before moving to Clermiston where she was joined by Margaret and Alan. Jill’s schooling days began at Fox Covert Primary School followed by St Augustine’s High School. After leaving school at the age of 16 Jill got her first job at Rentokil as a shorthand typist, then moved onto various jobs.

In 1983 Jill’s year got off to a flying start when she met Colin at a New Year Party. They were soon inseparable and enjoyed a romantic holiday to Ostend. This being their first holiday abroad together. Before long Jill & Colin were married here at St Kentigerns in October 1985.

Jill and Colin started their married life at Meadowbank where Jennifer and Stuart were born before they moved out to Parkgrove, Clermiston. Later that year Jill and Colin were delighted to welcome their new neighbours Margaret, Rab and family. Many a happy time was had bringing up both families together.

Jill’s whole life revolved around her family and whilst the children were still young, she set up her childminding business where she was very well respected.

Jill’s final job was with Edinburgh Sports Club as a receptionist before having to give up due to ill health.

Jill was at her happiest when all the family were together. She especially loved her holidays starting off at Torquay before introducing Colin and the children to many holidays abroad. We remember vividly of the holiday where all the Horsburgh clan booked a holiday to Lanzarote which involved catching a connecting flight via Gatwick. Jill being overly cautious took Colin and the kids down to Gatwick 4 hours before the rest of the family to ensure that they never missed their connection. Jill was always one step ahead!

Jill’s other love was for music and during many a family party everyone wanted to be part of her quiz team as her musical knowledge was excellent.

Stuart shared a lot of happy memories with his mum, one in particular being a trip to London to see Fleetwood Mac, which was one of Jill’s favourite bands.

Some of Jennifer’s special times were spent with her mum walking Bonnie the dog and Arthur’s Seat became a place they both enjoyed so much.

Sadly Jill was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in September 2011. She turned her diagnosis into something positive by starting to raise awareness of this cruel disease by visiting GP surgeries with information packs for doctors and patients. Jill also organised an annual event at the Gyle shopping centre where she, family and friends handed out thousands of information leaflets. Jill was also involved in many other fundraising activities with Target Ovarian, determined to make a difference so that others would not have to go through what she had experienced.

Sadly the last month of Jill’s life was spent in hospital and latterly in the loving care of St Columba’s Hospice.

Jill was a truly amazing wife to Colin, mum to Jennifer and Stuart, sister, auntie and great auntie and will forever be in our hearts.
